error 0xc000005
« on: November 08, 2009, 10:34:20 AM »
I have never used a forum to solve problems before and am hoping someone can help with this. My computer has been doing a few things lately that were not too bothersome, such as requiring me to reconnect to the internet even though I am already connected but now I have more serious problems. I am now trying to burn some DVD's and using Sonic that came with the computer and Nero I keep getting this Oxc000005 error. I did some reading and downloaded various malware/virus software and can not get rid of this error. After some more reading and fustration I downloaded SP3. After rebooting computer I still have the Oxc000005 error but I also get a DEP error just trying to open My Documents. My hijack this file is

Welcome to KRC Forum.

Let's see if we can trace the problem. Right click on My Computer and go to Manage. Then click on Event Viewer on the left panel. Click on Application and look for any red or yellow icons showing errors and warnings. Just double click on one if found and then click on the third icon that looks like two pieces of paper. This will copy the error into your clipboard. Paste the error message here. Give me the last 3-5 errors from here. Then go to System and do the same thing. You can copy/paste all of them into your next reply (no need for separate replies).

One of these methods should fix the Dr. Watson (DEP) problem:

1. Go to My Computer->Tools->Folder Option->View and check 'Show hidden files and folders' and uncheck 'Hide protected operating system files'. Go to your c: drive. Right click on the boot.ini file and go to Properties. Uncheck the box that says Read-only and click OK. Then double click on the boot.ini file to open it. Change the line that says /NoExecute=OptIn and change it to /NoExecute=AlwaysOff. Now save the file and close it.

2. Right click My Computer and select Properties. Go to Advanced tab->Startup and Recovery and click Settings. Click the drop-down box next to 'Write debugging information' and select none.

3. Go to Start->Run and type in regedit and hit OK. Go to File->Export and save the registry somewhere as a backup. Go back to the Registry Editor and navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\AeDebug. Double click on 'Auto' (in the right pane) and modify the value to 0.

O.K. thanks for getting back so quick to me. I was posting my reply when my son turned off my computer. I made the changes you requested and I still get this error. I see the paper symbol beside the errors but I am not too computer smart. Where is the clipboard the files are posted to? I thought they might be in windows accessories but I only see notepad. I may not be able to post back right away as my wife got called into work and now I have to babysit.

I only need the ones with the errors and/or warnings which I see 4 here. You can double click on them one at a time. Just double click on one now and click on the icon with the two papers. Then right click and paste in your next reply. Do this for the other remaining errors.

I hope this is not too fustrating, but when I click on the two papers I don't know where this info is going. When I double click on the two paper icon I just get a "Whats This". I am learning a little though I see you can apply filters and show just errors and warnings which is what I have done. The only place I see where the files are is in export. Which I have done below. I don't know if I am exporting the proper files. If its is not too fustrating can I get some additional details. I don't understand where I am supposed to right click to paste reply.

That's not a problem. When you click on that icon with the two papers, Windows already made a copy of it. All you have to do is right click and paste it here. Repeat for the next few/recent errors or warnings (click on icon and right click to paste here).

Any problems using your DVD drive to read CDs or DVDs?

If possible, try uninstall Sonic DVD and Nero via your Add/Remove Programs panel. Restart the computer and then reinstall both programs back to see if the problem is still there.

I can read cd's and dvd's but I have not been able to write anything to them using
sonic or nero. I don't have the disks for sonic since it was preinstalled on the computer. The nero that I had installed was a trial version. I will try uninstalling and reinstalling the nero. If the nero works I will probably purchase a copy.

Success! I think I have everything working again. I have not reloaded nero or sonic yet. I can look at all my pictures and video in my documents without windows shutting me down. I do still get an error that if its easy to fix great if not I will quit while am ahead. I have some AVI files downloaded that if I try to open with windows media player or quicktime windows locks up The error I get is below (first of several). If I should start a new thread let me know. Again thanks for all the help, would not have been able to figure this out without your help.

What did you do to resolve the problem?

Is Windows Media Player crashing on you? It seems to be having a problem from the last error you posted. If you have any special video codecs installed, try uninstalling them and see if the crashing returns. If not, you can try installing the codecs back and see how it goes from there.

Sorry, I have been away from computer for a little bit. I am not sure whether removing sonic and nero is what fixed problem or not. I reloaded nero but not sonic. Windows media player seems to play some mpegs of videos from my camera but not any avi's. Sonic crashes when I try to load avi's also. I found a codec called ffdshow in device manager that when I click on properties I get an error. I deleted the file but it reappears when I play an MPEG with media player. Should I delete all the audio and video codecs and try again? I have read a little about codecs and some seem problematic. Is there location where I can get all the codecs I need in one place. How do I know which codecs to download. Sorry for so many questions, but I am pretty new to this. Ultimately, I would like to burn these AVI's to a dvd. I tried just copying the AVI's to a data dvd, but they don't play in my older Denon DVD or my newer Sony Blue-Ray. Should I try converting AVI's to a different format suitable for a DVD player? How?

You can go to your Add/Remove Programs panel and remove all the codecs you installed before in the past. Before getting any codecs installed back, try using a program called VLC Player which you can download for free at:

http://www.videolan.org/vlc/

It should be able to play a lot of different media types that are encoded using different codecs. If you still have problems viewing some videos, then I highly recommend getting the K-Lite Media Codec Pack:

http://download.cnet.com/K-Lite-Mega-Codec-Pack/3000-13632_4-10794603.html

It usually contains a good amount of the common codecs that you will need.

Depending on the DVD player you have, they may not be able to play AVI or DivX encoded video files. You can use your Nero burning software to burn those AVI files as video instead of data (where you just drag and drop the files). The software should be able to convert the video files for you (this will take some time).

You can also use third party programs to do the conversion if you like. Most DVD players should definitely support the MPEG format. You can try using avitompeg to do this:

http://www.avitompeg.net/

It will convert the avi files to mpeg and then you can try burning it to a DVD.

O.K. I know its probably right in front of me, but all I see are programs listed. I see a bunch of windows programs and updates along with media player, but I don't see anything labelled video or audio codecs. I tried removing the codecs using control panel>system>hardware>device manager>sound video controllers but I delete the video codecs and as soon as I delete them they reappear when I check to see that they were removed. I am learning, hopefully this is not too annoying. Again, thanks for the help.

They are usually clearly labeled as codec in their name if you installed them using those "packages". Otherwise, if you installed them manually (one at a time), they might be in their original names. We can just skip this step if that's the case.

Just give VLC a try to see if they play your videos.

O.K. I downloaded VLC player and can open and watch all my AVI files. When I try using NERO to convert AVI files I get an error and the program shuts down. I will try using avitompeg to burn a disc and let you know how I make out. Thanks for your continued help.
