Shareaza and software and music
« on: December 08, 2009, 11:02:57 PM »
Since it crossed into software program and music, I, AGAIN, lol, just picked a category

simple question, if anyone is familiar with this program (I use Limewire as my main source (understanding KEVIN, that I am subject to etc etc )
how do I get it to stop making itself as the default download source for EVERYTHING

For instance I downloaded a new software for my new blackberry, and the link immediately opened Shareaza.  It is irritating considering that cable and t1 and just about anything is quicker than waiting for that.

thanks so much

Let's say I click a link on Tmobiles site for new blackberry software, once I click it, Shareaza opens to download the file (torrent, bitorrent, etc??? whatever they are)

It happened occasionally   with XP but it seems to be happening with a lot of downloads with the new puter

What kind of file type is the download? If exe, can you confirm that it's happening to all exe files that you try to download? If so, you can just change the file association properties for exe files. To do this, go to your command prompt (Start > Run or in Windows Vista/7 case, you might have to do a Start and type in cmd), and enter the following:

ASSOC .EXE=exefile

Hit your ENTER key and close out that window.

We need to find a pattern on when and what file type it's happening to. It shouldn't just be happening on some and not all the time especially if it's a file association issue.

I typed that  cmd.  and then the ASSOC .EXE=exefile

but what did that do??

I didn't know that is what you were looking for.

I am fairly certain that the type of files these are is Install files

Do you know if they are EXE install files or perhaps MSI? If MSI, try the following command:

assoc .msi=Msi.Package

I am confused.  I thought they were install files.  They come when I want to install a program.  Aren't install different than exe files??

EXE and MSI can both be used to install programs. Depending on how the program was packaged, it could be using either of these methods. If you don't believe this, feel free to go download any program. I bet you 90% of the time or more, it will be an installer using EXE instead of MSI. I tend to find that mostly Microsoft uses MSI since it's the Windows Installer. I have seen this especially in their Office packages.

EXE files are also executable files for your programs. So after you install a program from a .exe file, you will probably run another .exe that launches the software itself.

If you still want more details on this, Google for EXE vs. MSI and I'm sure you will find a bunch of hits.

Did you run the last command for the MSI file that I mentioned earlier? I didn't see a reply from you indicating that it was performed yet.

If that still won't do it, either get rid of Shareaza or uninstall and reinstall it after a restart.

Reinstalling Shareaza worked !!!  :)

I saw an option that is only there during install...it is nowhere in the preferences...it says "do you want Shareaza to handle ALL torrents?"  I selected NO this time and it fixed it.

Thanks
