Internet Connection Blocks
« on: July 25, 2010, 08:53:27 PM »
Internet connections gets blocked outbound when I try to access antivirus and other sites that may help me find a fix.  Windows update site inoperable.  Searches often go to incorrect search site and google links often go to incorrect sites that appear to offer more malware.  Windows Defender will not update.  Several trojans already removed.  McAfee, Adaware and Spybot S&D don't detect anything.  Can't seem to F8 into safe mode on power up on HP Mini 110.

Please print the below instructions or copy them to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the order mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.

Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following if they still exist and hit 'Fix Checked' after you checked the last one:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyServer = http=127.0.0.1:5643
O4 - HKLM\..\Policies\Explorer\Run: [RTHDBPL] C:\Documents and Settings\Melinda\Application Data\SystemProc\lsass.exe

Locate the following Files/Folders and delete them if they exist (if no location given, just do a search for them):

C:\Documents and Settings\Melinda\Application Data\SystemProc\

Go to http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix and follow the instructions on how to install the Recovery Console and run ComboFix. Go through all the steps until posting the log part. Post the combofix log here.

If you have problems downloading ComboFix, try to get it from another computer and burn it to a CD so you can copy the file over here.

Combofix will not complete running.  Never gets to "Stage one Complete" even left to run overnight.  Could not locate folder you wanted deleted.  Current HJT attached here.

How is the computer so far?

Download OTL to your desktop.
- Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
- When the window appears, underneath Output at the top change it to Minimal Output.
- Click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
- When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTListIt.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.
- Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of these files, one at a time, and post it with your next reply. You may need two posts to fit them all in.

The computer does basically the same thing it did before, random redirects to bogus virus and registry helper programs.  Microsoft update still comes up as if there is no internet connection while other pages come up fine.  Google links go to above sites opposed to where they are to go.

Re: Internet Connection Blocks
« Reply #5 on: August 02, 2010, 09:31:02 PM »
Get your McAfee install CD or install file ready. Disconnect from the internet and uninstall all the McAfee software on this computer. Restart the computer and reinstall it back. The software seems to be corrupted in one way or another and also may be the reason behind some of the blocked connections if the firewall is acting up.

Perform an online scan with Internet Explorer at Panda ActiveScan http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/activescan.htm

* Click on 'Scan your PC' button. There should be a popup - if you have a pop-up blocker, make sure it's not blocking it.
* Click 'Check Now' & a pop-up window will appear.
* Enter your Country, State and E-mail Address & click 'Scan Now' - begin downloading Panda's ActiveX controls (8 MB size).
* Begin the scan by selecting My Computer.
* If it finds any malware, it will offer you a report. Ignore any entry it finds (since it wants you to buy the program for removal) as we will address this later.
* Click on see report. Then click Save report.
* Post that log in your next reply.
